28 March 2008Our son has had a rough time over the past couple of years, and one of his multiple problems is seasonal allergies. Since we relocated to South Carolina my son has battled allergies which continued past spring, into summer, through fall, beyond Christmas and were still there the following spring. We met with several Doctor’s and more than one ENT, all to no avail. Over the course of the year we were prescribed several prescription drugs that didn’t seem to even help drain his sinuses, let alone halt the allergies. His little cheeks were often red and puffy, and very sore. My sister-in-law had suggested we try light massage to help his sinuses drain but often his face was too painful to touch, let alone massage. The major problem came at night as he lay down to sleep, his nose would close almost completely to the point where listening to him try to breathe almost made us wince. It wasn’t any fun at all, especially not for him.
So today while I was making the rounds of news organizations, I clicked on an article at the New York Times that caught my eye. The headline in the (03.27.08) online edition, read: “WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it is investigating a possible link between Merck’s best-selling Singulair and suicide. FDA said it is reviewing a handful of reports involving mood changes, suicidal behavior and suicide in patients who have taken the popular allergy and asthma drug.”
What? Suicidal behavior? Mood changes? Scary side effects to say the least. So what is an allergy plagued person to do? One of the medications we had used to treat his sinus problems and allergies was Singulair (along with Zyrtec and Clariten). He was, of course, prescribed the pediatric version, but at a double dose to combat his tough problem. At the time it was very hard mentally to keep giving him the drugs but we were at a loss as to what else to do. We genuinely thought we had tried everything else first, including a humidifier, excessive vacuuming, Echinacea, and various other different remedies specific to allergies and sinus problems that we purchased at the health food store, none of which had made any difference to his sinuses.
The quote, in the article from a Merck spokesman would almost be funny if it wasn’t so sad and scary, the quote reads “”We have no indication that anything about the mechanism of Singulair is consistent with these events,” said George Philip, director of research and product development. ”But because suicide is a life-threatening event we thought it was important to provide this information in the product label.”” A life threatening event! That is somewhat of an understatement surely?

Well there may be a better way. We went to our local chiropractor who told us the following: Chiropractic adjustments to the neck and base of the skull help alleviate the signs and symptoms associated with sinus blockage. The pain comes from blocked sinuses clogged with mucus from bacterial and viral growth. Our son was in pain, from his sinus pressure, he had frequent nose bleeds, but he could never get to the runny nose part of the process, he always remined bunged up, he would scratch and rub at his itchy eyes, he also complained of headaches, ear aches, and occasional sore throats which also caused excessive throat clearing. The chiropractor took us through the process and explained that when you release the upper neck bones and take the pressure off the nerves that innervate the head and sinuses, the head and neck are able to start the process of healing themselves. Our chiropractor also suggested we purchase a Neti Pot. The guy at our local health food store who knows our family well, was sceptical as I purchased it, convinced that there was no way I could get my four year old to use this. Well we showed him didn’t we? The first time he used it we sat him in the tub and showed him how it worked, and lo and behold the kid is a natural. He does it very well by himself and then just a few weeks ago, he proudly showed our neighbor’s three year old daughter how it worked; after our success they decided to try the pot for the same reasons we had. In just three short days, using a combination of chiropractic care and the Neti Pot, my son’s sinuses had quieted down. After over a year, he can breathe properly again. It’s been about 3 months now and he uses the pot a few times a week, and so far so good, no more sinus infections, no more allergies, even his one colds only last a day. So if you are plagued by allergies, sinus problems or even just a cold, talk to your chiropractor and use the Neti Pot in conjunction with your regular adjustments, who knows it may help keep you off medication too.
