Recalls, and warnings, how do you know?

14 October 2008

Recalls, notices, and items removed from the market, how do you find out?

Your favorite headache medicine just got a black box warning, but you still have 500 left in your bottle so you will never know until the end of the pill bottle that you should have been much more careful with.

Your dog food contains plastic, your water is tainted, and the drug you have taken for 10 years suddenly gets pulled from the market. How on earth do you find this information in a timely manner? Many people are not aware that the FDA provides a free, email update service to those who register their email address, and when products or items are recalled or removed due to a safety issue, you will be informed via email. To subscribe go to FDA enter your email address, confirm and select your preferences. Then click the under the heading View all subscriptions available for: U.S. Food and Drug administration. You will be taken to an extensive list of possibilities.
Including but not limited to:

To name just a few of the categories.

It’s actually very interesting to see how much is recalled that we don’t ever hear about from mass media, a couple of recent additions have been:

Barry Callebaut USA LLC is conducting a voluntary recall on its product sold by Kroger Stores under the brand “Kroger Value Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips”, 12 oz.

Or how about:

HUA XIA Food Trade USA, Inc. of Flushing, NY, is recalling YILI Brand Sour Milk Drink packaged in 250ml flexible paperboard boxes (all codes and all lots are affected) and YILI Brand Pure Milk Drink packaged in 250ml flexible paperboard boxes (all codes and all lots are affected) because it may be contaminated with melamine.

Or finally:

Tristar Food, Jersey City, NJ is initiating a nationwide recall of all of their 100 ml plastic bottle packages of Blue Cat Flavor Drink (Lanmao) because it may be contaminated with Melamine.

Become an informed consumer, educate yourself, it is simply not enough to rely on someone else to keep you updated.

Peanut Butter Recall: Kellogg Company Announces Precautionary Hold on Austin and Keebler Branded Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers Contact: Kellogg Consumer Response Center 888-314-2060

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Battle Creek, MI — January 14, 2009 — Kellogg Company today announced it has taken the precautionary measure of putting a hold on Austin® and Keebler® branded Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Crackers, Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, and Peanut Butter-Chocolate Sandwich Crackers.

FDA and other regulatory agencies have indicated that Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) is the focus of their investigation concerning a recent Salmonella outbreak thought to be caused by tainted peanut butter. PCA is one of several peanut paste suppliers that the company uses in its Austin® and Keebler® branded peanut butter sandwich crackers.

Kellogg Company’s investigation has not indicated any concerns, nor has the Company received any consumer illness complaints about these products.

Nonetheless, Kellogg Company is taking precautionary measures including putting a hold on any inventory in its control, removing product from retail store shelves, and encouraging customers and consumers to hold and not eat these products until regulatory officials complete their investigation of PCA and Kellogg provides further information as to the resolution of this issue.

“Consumer health and safety is our top priority,” said David Mackay, president and CEO, Kellogg Company. “We are taking these voluntary actions out of an abundance of caution.”

While no additional consumer action is necessary at this time, consumers with questions or who would like a product refund can call the Kellogg Consumer Response Center at 888-314-2060

NB: This recall is being taken seriously by companies who use peanut butter in their products such as various ice-cream producers.  If you are worried about a product you have on your shelf go to the FDA recall site and type in your search query.
